Welcome to your monthly ecommerce ad news roundup. Every month I go through the ecommerce ad news from Google, Meta, Amazon, OpenAI and the rest, and bring you only the bits that matter for your store.
This month's biggest story might already be live on your Shopify store, and you didn't lift a finger.
Meta's AI Agent Can Now Buy From Your Shopify Store
Practical Ecommerce reported in late September that Shopify has added Meta as an AI channel inside the Shopify admin. Your Shopify Catalog products are shared with Muse, Meta's personal AI agent, by default. Muse can then find your products and check out on a shopper's behalf, using Shop Pay, PayPal or Stripe's Link wallet.
Read that "by default" part again. If you sell on Shopify, you are very likely in this already.
Muse isn't a novelty either. It has passed 5 million downloads and 3 million weekly users, and Meta is now offering it to small businesses. Amazon went the other way and blocked Muse from its marketplace, citing security, privacy and transparency concerns. So Shopify merchants are in, and Amazon is out.
My take: I like this for most stores. A new sales channel that costs nothing to join is rare. But an AI agent is an unforgiving shopper. It can't squint at a blurry photo or guess what "Classic Tee V2" means. It reads your product data and nothing else, so if your data is thin, the sale goes to a store whose data isn't.
What To Check This Week
Open your Shopify admin, find the Meta channel in your Agentic Storefronts settings, and decide whether you want to be in. Make it an active choice.
Check your product titles say what the product is, in the plain words a stranger would search for.
Check your images, prices and stock levels are accurate. An agent that buys something you can't ship is a refund and an unhappy customer.
Make sure your returns policy is clear and easy to find.
That same product data feeds your Standard Shopping and Performance Max campaigns, so every hour you spend on it pays you twice.
ChatGPT Ads Just Became Practical For Product Testing
OpenAI has had a busy month. Search Engine Land reported on 30 September that ChatGPT Ads now supports bulk product campaign creation and deeper reporting, including product review status and conversion reporting.
First, OpenAI is testing Sponsored Agents. Someone clicks your ad in ChatGPT and starts a conversation with an agent that represents your brand. Second, Shopify is the first ecommerce integration, so ChatGPT Ads now plugs into the platform most of you already use. Third, in a US pilot, Amazon DSP buyers can now reach ChatGPT ad inventory, with Amazon acting as a reseller.
Put that together and product feeds are now effectively required. ChatGPT Ads is turning into a Shopping-style channel, much like Google Shopping was fifteen years ago.
The early results are all over the place, though. One agency spent $415 for a 0.6% CTR and no interested buyers. Another reported $20,000 in spend returning $69,000. Nobody has agreed benchmarks yet, and many of the early tests predate the newer targeting and conversion tools, so neither number is a clean verdict.
Sponsored Agents raise a question I'd answer before switching them on. You have a process for approving ad copy, so what is your process for approving what an AI agent says on your behalf? Nail down returns, pricing and delivery promises before it starts chatting to your customers.
My take: if you're on Shopify with a clean product feed, now is the time to run a small test budget. Bulk campaigns and the Shopify integration make that practical for the first time. Keep it small, keep your Q4 money where you can measure it, and treat what you learn as a head start for 2027.
Google's Holiday Toolkit: What To Switch On Before Black Friday
Google rolled out a batch of holiday shopping updates through September, announced on its blog and by the Google Ads Liaison.
AI Performance Insights In Merchant Center
Merchant Center now shows your share of voice across AI Mode and AI Overviews, in the US, Canada, Australia, India and New Zealand. This is the first official look at how often your products show up in Google's AI answers. Open it, note your baseline now, and check it again after Black Friday.
Local Customer Optimisation In Performance Max
If you have physical stores, there is a new campaign-level toggle in Performance Max store goals campaigns. Switch it on and Google prioritises your budget towards people actively in-market nearby, across Google Maps, Waze and local Search. It's rolling out now. Online-only stores can skip this one.
AI Max For Shopping
AI Max for Shopping is now in open beta. I'd test it on a slice of your catalogue rather than everything, and give it a fair run before peak trading. Flicking it on in the middle of Black Friday week is asking for trouble.
Google is also testing a Business Agent inside YouTube ads, another sign that every platform wants an AI agent talking to your customers.
The stat I'd pin to your wall, though, is this one. Google says merchants who follow its core feed recommendations see a 5% average conversion increase the following month. Those are free conversions, from fixing issues Merchant Center is already flagging. Do that before anything else on this list.
The FTC Says Amazon Quietly Inflated Your Sponsored Products Costs
If you sell on Amazon, this one deserves your attention.
On 31 August, the FTC and 22 US states sued Amazon, alleging it secretly inflated prices in its Sponsored Products auctions for over seven years. The complaint says Amazon used a hidden "soft reserve" price that acted like a fake bidder, so winners paid close to their full bid instead of the runner-up's price. The FTC claims this extracted at least $20 billion from advertisers.
Amazon disputes it, says it saved advertisers over $8 billion between 2021 and 2025, and calls the claims "misguided". The suit seeks civil penalties and restitution, so nothing changes in your account tomorrow.
My take: this is a good reason to look at your own numbers. Pull your Sponsored Products reports and compare your average CPC against your bids. If you're consistently paying almost exactly what you bid, make a note of it, both for this case and for how you set bids from now on. Bid what a click is actually worth to you, because if the FTC is right, you may well pay close to it.
Adobe Forecasts A Record $275.1 Billion Holiday Season
To finish, a number to anchor your Q4 plans.
Retail TouchPoints reported that Adobe expects US shoppers to spend $275.1 billion online between 1 November and 31 December, up 6.7% on last year. Black Friday is set to grow faster than Cyber Monday, although Cyber Monday stays the biggest single day. Shoppers are using the deals to stock up on essentials, not just to treat themselves.
The backdrop is less rosy. Consumer confidence is at a 12-year low, and peak shipping surcharges are already in force, from UPS since 27 September and USPS since 4 October.
So people will spend, but they're cautious and they want value. My take: build your Black Friday plans around genuine deals on the products people need. Check your margins can absorb the higher shipping costs before you set your ROAS targets. And have your budgets ready to scale on Black Friday itself, rather than saving everything for Cyber Monday.
Conclusion
Five stories this month, and they share a theme: AI agents are becoming shoppers, and your product data decides whether they buy from you.
Meta's Muse agent can now shop and check out on Shopify stores, with Shopify Catalog products shared by default and checkout through Shop Pay, PayPal and Stripe Link. Amazon has blocked it. Muse has passed 5 million downloads and 3 million weekly users. Check the Meta channel in your Shopify Agentic Storefronts settings and make it an active choice, then tidy your titles, images, prices, stock and returns policy.
